Melamine is the ideal material from which to make food safe trays for the home or for use in the catering industry. The durability of melamine makes it very resistant to getting chipped or broken even when used frequently.

Despite being a tough material, the finished product is actually very lightweight. This helps when you need to use your melamine serving tray to carry dinner plates and multiple drinks which are themselves quite heavy.

At the same time the melamine trays are heat resistant to somewhere around 120C-140C so you do not need to be concerned about serving hot plates or dishes directly on the tray. Despite having this high level of heat resistance, they are not appropriate for using in the microwave or directly into ovens as the compounds that make up melamine would not survive the extreme heat.

The big benefit of melamine trays is the non-porous nature of the finished melamine surface, this ensures that they are food safe and comply with food safety regulations.

The food safety aspect is important as it allows you to present food such as sandwiches directly onto the surface of the melamine sandwich tray. The trays can then be easily wiped clean when your guests have left and any stains are simply removed. If preferred the melamine trays can be cleaned in the dishwasher.

This means the artwork from the manufacturers such as Portmeirion or Pimpernel can appear crisp and sharp. This allows the manufacturers, if needed for the design, to use clear and bold colours. Something that cheaper plastic materials cannot achieve so easily.
